About

Alda Sigmundsdóttir the Author of the Little Books about Iceland

Hi I’m Alda

I live in Reykjavík, Iceland, where I was born. I have also lived in Canada, Cyprus, the United Kingdom and Germany, for longer or shorter periods. English is my first language, meaning it’s the language in which I am most proficient, but Icelandic is a very close second. I am also fluent in German.

I lived in Canada as a child and went to high school there. When I finished I had one of those ubiquitous “I don’t know what to do with my life” crises and wound up moving to Europe where I hoped I would figure it out. I taught English in the UK, Spain, and Germany, before coming full circle in Iceland, where I had not lived since I was a child. My experiences moving back could fill an entire book, but suffice it to say that I managed to assimilate enough to want to stay. I started writing and translating from Icelandic to English, running my own business for many years and providing writing, translating, teaching, and interpreting services to a wide range of clients. From 2001-2003 I had a stint in a “regular” job working for the British Embassy as a Public Relations and Assistant Commercial Officer.

I used to have a blog called The Iceland Weather Report (the story behind the name is here) which I wrote religiously from 2005 to 2010. When I stopped updating the site, the blog sort of continued on a Facebook page, which was active until September of 2014. I am still active on social media, though, most notably on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

I am married to the kindest, funniest man in the world, and have one daughter, three stepdaughters, three step-grandsons, and a dog. They are all completely gorgeous.
